RaceLab – Quick Start & FAQ

This page answers the most common questions about using the RaceLab app, overlays, Discord, VR support, and streaming. If you are still unsure after reading, our community is happy to help.

Q – How do I use the app?

Each supported game has its own prerequisites. These are listed inside the app as First Steps, and can also be found under the Support section in the app.

Q – How do I use the RaceLab Discord?

Join our Discord and visit the #welcome channel. From there, assign yourself the roles for the channels you want to access (for example, help, VR, suggestions).

Q – I can’t see the overlays

First, make sure you have completed the First Steps in the app for your game. If overlays are still not visible, please post in #i-need-help on Discord. There is no need to tag anyone directly – we review this channel regularly and will respond when we can.

Q – Why can’t I click through the overlays?

The overlays are locked so you can position them without accidentally moving them. To unlock the overlays:

  • Click the padlock icon inside the app, or
  • Press CTRL + SHIFT + L on your keyboard.

Q – Can I hide the overlays to see what’s behind them?

Yes. You can temporarily hide all overlays by pressing:

CTRL + SHIFT + H – press the same keys again to show them again.

Q – Does the app support full-screen mode?

No. The overlays do not work in exclusive full-screen mode. You need to run your game in windowed or borderless windowed mode. For each game, we explain how to set this up in the Support section of the app.

Q – Does RaceLab work in VR?

Yes. RaceLab works natively through SteamVR and is fully supported by OpenKneeboard for OpenXR.

For more help, visit the #virtual-reality channel on Discord. Quest VR users can also follow our setup video.

NOTE: The current VR Beta allows overlays in VR without SteamVR.

Q – How do I stream the overlays?

To show overlays on your stream:

  1. Open the overlay or layout in the app.
  2. Copy the Streaming URL provided.
  3. In your streaming software (for example, OBS), add a Browser Source.
  4. Paste the URL into the browser source and enable auto-refresh (if available).

Q – I’m still stuck and need help

Don’t worry – everyone’s PC and sim setup is a little different, and we understand that things don’t always work perfectly first time.

For general help and support, please post your questions in #i-need-help. If Istvan is not available, our community members and moderators may still be able to help.

Q - How to configure Overlays?

Click this link for that info

Q - When using VR the TAB key does not work to enter VR Edit mode.

  1. If using iracing, join a session and click options. Click option again. You will see a section relating to Split / Delta timing.  It uses TAB key as a default hot key. Be sure to change the TAB key assignment to another key.
  2. If your wheel software requires it to be run as Administrator, you will need to also run your sim game, and Racelab as administrator. Or, if the game for some rerason is run as administrator, Racelab must also be run as administrator.  Normally, that is not required.

Q – When using VR the TAB key does not work to enter VR edit mode

If pressing TAB in VR does nothing, there are two common causes to check:

  1. iRacing split / delta timing uses TAB: In iRacing, join a session and open Options. Look for the section that controls the split / delta timing bar – by default it often uses TAB as its hotkey. Change that binding to another key so RaceLab can use TAB for VR edit mode.
  2. Administrator rights mismatch: If your wheel software or your sim is running as Administrator, then RaceLab should also be run as Administrator. Either run all three (wheel software, sim and RaceLab) as normal user, or all three as admin. Mixing one as admin and the others as normal can block hotkeys like TAB.
